The CYM course is a 3-year Honours degree in Youth & Community Work with Applied Theology. It is a unique Christian vocational course which includes the JNC professional qualification for people with an energy and desire to work with and for young people.

Youth or Adult? Initiative
Jason Allen

YOAI is an excellent intiative from the Rank Foundation, training youthworkers up for life. It combines an innovative project seeking to combat urban and rural deprivation through local, organic projects. Whilst heading this up, the worker completes 5 years of training at YMCA George Williams College, securing a JNC and BA Ord Degree.

Gap Year Initiatives

We have been able to take on gap year students on a number of different schemes since late 2005. In all cases this has involved their enrollment in foundation studies at YMCA George Williams College, independently or through Salmon Youth Centre.

the academy

We sometimes joke about being a ‘youthwork academy’ at St Mary’s Centre. That’s because many of our staff are individuals who, as well as volunteering or working with young people every week, are also working towards completing a diploma or foundation studies qualification in youthwork. We have also taken on a number of placement students from other organisations in and outside London including Central School of Speech & Drama, Time For God and Cambridge CYM, and often find ourselves working to provide unusual placements: most recently the National University of Science & Technology in Harare, Zimbabwe and a non-violence youth organisation from Cameroon. Training and development are a key part of how we want to see not only young people develop, but those who work with them.
