Millennium Volunteers
‘MV is aimed at young people aged 16-24. As an MV you volunteer your time to help others by doing something you enjoy.’ Since September 2005, St Mary’s Centre has acted as an MV placement for a number of young people doing sports coaching and youth clubs. To find out more e-mail us!
Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme
‘D of E’, as it is often called, is a programme of activities young people can do in their spare time. It involves 4 main strands: service, skills, physical recreation and an expedition. If you’re interested in volunteering with us as part of your ‘service’ then get in touch!
Other Schemes
There are many other schemes and organisations which encourage volunteering, including most recently Full-On Volunteering (formerly the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers). Got a new one or none at all? Drop us a line!
We rely on the support and involvement of people from the local community to maintain and develop our work. Volunteers can come from all walks of life: young people, retired people, parents, college students, high-powered professionals or anyone! Volunteers may have different reasons for getting involved as well, for example…
• A desire to put something back into society.
• A desire to build a closer and better community.
• A pleasure in meeting and working with other people.
• A concern for the welfare of others in the community.
• A challenge to put faith into practice in a relevant way.
• A need for a change from the office, library or living room.
• An opportunity to gain practical experience for the future.
We provide training for volunteers, so here are a few ways you could get involved:
• Bringing new ideas and energy for community projects.
• Helping with fundraising for the centre or programmes.
• Giving your time to help with a weekly drop-in or youthwork session.
• Donating your skills, e.g. in IT, administration or other practical areas.
• Offering your time and expertise as part of our management committee.
